reflections for the lost41. City Without RestAs we passed nearer to the city, we passed a few lightly armored encampments. There were a few peasants farming and working the land, and a few guards. The guards were a little too far off the roadside to see clearly, but they apparently led very large dogs around with them. Are they there to keep the farmers from danger? As we rode closer to the city, I observed that the wall was taller than I had expected, and made of a finely placed stone. At regular intervals a dark, almost blood coloured or stained metal, banded and reinforced the walls. I have never seen or read of walls reinforced by steel in this way, let alone this strange alloy. The guards at the gate were not cooperative in allowing us to enter. Not only did they require our names and intent, but they seemed bent at directing us around the city. They explained there was a tent city set up outside the walls for travelers, even though there was an Inn inside the walls. They stated that there were no exports at this time, and little to trade inside the city. After Whit's feeble tale about exotic wood trading, it was Rihana's bosom I believe that tipped the cards in our favor, for it stopped his questioning and allowed us to enter unmolested by searches. All our weapons were peace bonded. At least they were not confiscated. Within the relative safety of the city walls, we split into smaller groups in order to save time. I tried to question some of the townsfolk but none of them would look at me. I had the distinct feeling they were all staring at my left or right ear as I spoke to them. I received monosyllable answers when I received one at all. This malaise that has affected the people of Telyth hangs like a dark shroud over their spark. During the height of the day, even the sunlight seemed muted. Has the Light abandoned these people, or have they abandoned the Light? It is said that no one has walked in the shadow for so long they cannot come again into the Light. I hope I have not come here to die. Previous Entry Next Entry |
