reflections for the lost

13. Altars

Sanantha threw her holy water and destroyed something beyond my experience. I had watched each of my companions drop down the trapdoor roughly cut in the damp grey stone on the floor. I heard Lobar bellow his warcries, and knew that the small angle I was afforded would not give me the view I required to choose my attack. I had placed a step into the drop when a strange wave of fear came through me. I felt shame within me, and I steeled myself. When I looked below, I saw a strange stone skinned dwarf of unusual size below me. His cap was red, and I saw rivulets of what I hoped was his blood dripping down his back.

I knew I had the advantage of surprise, and I studied him as he laid about with a devastating war axe, likes of which I had never imagined were possible, with a wicked hooked curve to its blade. For a moment only I delayed to unhitch my morningstar from my leather backpack, where it had been stored, haft rolled in my bedroll and spiked end capped with leather, as I watched swordblades strike and ring ineffective from his skin.

I tumbled down, and struck from his flank. Squarely my blow landed upon his back, and I heard a chipping and saw flakes of him flash and spray away. He truly did appear as stone! It was my surprise at this that dealt me the most horrible sight thus far- he spun around with nimbleness defying his stony build and struck me, a strong overhead strike upon my breast. I know only that I clutched the haft of the axe as it sunk through me, and then there was a lifting, soaring feeling, like flight, and darkness.

I felt the Else within me. Pulsing and beating furiously. It was T'marrack who brought me into the Light and back from thoughts of my mother's eyes, crystal clear blue and filling me with water, filling me faster and faster as I knew it just poured out. My first sight was on the ground, my head facing just so I could see Sanantha destroy this black Altar. Then the sweet warm sleep took me again.
