The Kaeron, the Faery, the Shining Ones, the Fathers of Modern Wizardry, the Formori, the Demons of the North - the mere mention of these people evokes strong emotions within the hearts of all races. Theirs is the classic tale of paradise lost. Some would say that their story ended in damnation. Others are not so sure. Very little is known of them before the time of Enslavement. Most of their records were destroyed during the fallout of the Kaeron wars, and much of the dwarven and human scholarship of this time was lost when the Faery enslavemeant began. Scholars of a more conspiratorial bent believe that they deliberately hid their origins from the rest of Talanu. If that is the case, they apparently did a masterful job of incorporating themselves seamlessly into society, as what little information we do have does not indicate that they were of foreign origin. Like most races, they appear to have always been here. As an aside to the wild eyed speculators - What is strange is that the Kaeron left no record of a genesis myth at all. Their contemporaries the Kharolan, as well as the ancient human societies, (Nemeddian, Galatinae, Turukai, etc), all left some indication of this nigh universal cultural element. This drives some of my colleagues to distraction, and so they feel the need to see ancient curses and the ruin of modern civilization around every corner. Regardless! During this time, the Kaeron were fast friends with the rest of the intelligent races. It is, in fact, from the relics of their contemporaries that we find our best descriptions of their original way of life. In the most descriptive passage we have from that era, Bahv Nithir, Nemeddian ambassador to the land of "Ahrd Rig Lakithi, the wise Faery King," states that his hosts were "surpassingly fair and wise, with gifts unbridled in measure, and wealth far outstripping that of mortal man. What they lack in Strength, they have double measure in Wit and Pulchritude. They are given fully to merriment and carousal, and it is a true joy to see these creatures in their cups; my Lord Scadra himself would have been proud. This Elfin Lord of mine, Lakithi of the Rose, has his hand upon his harp more often than his sword, and his gossamer wings shake with laughter from dusk till dawn." Bahv Nithir goes on to describe the appearance of several of the guests, and from it most scholars derive our concept of the ancient Kaeron. They tended to be tall, most well over 7', but very thin. Nithir likens them to "reeds made of silver and glass, filled with an inner light." Eye color tended to blues and greens, and hair color tended towards white. Their skin was white to the point of light blue. They wore brightly colored clothing, and often decorated their boots and cloaks with bells. So what happened to change these fair creatures, beloved by their fellows, into first bloodthirsty raiders and then evil tyrants? Popular wisdom states that Dana saw in them the capacity for something great, and so she taught the first secrets of Wizardry to a few of their leaders. Their aptitude outstripped even Dana's expectations, and soon the Faery elders became Talanu's first archmages. Into this situation stepped Chemelosian, who is said to have twisted the pride of the Kaeron into something more sinister. This corrupting influence apparently planted the seeds for what was to become first a virulent xenophobia, and then a violent lust for dominance. The rest, as they say, is history. They used their newfound might to enslave a large portion of the continent, and then spent a thousand years or so perfecting their art. Dana realized her mistake, and put in to motion a plan that eventually lead to the liberation of the races by Daran Kar-thone, and the destruction of Kaeron society. Those who survived either fled, or were cursed by Colanx Ursulan. The cursed are now known as the Drow. Those who fled simply disappeared. TemplateKaeron, EL +3Medium Humanoid
