Aengus
(The Young God, the Summer King)
Lesser Power of the Outlands, CG

PORTFOLIO: Youth, pleasure, vigor, physical beauty, music

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, the Yellow Tower

SUPERIOR: The Dagda, Astara

ALLIES: Astara, Brigitta, the Dagda, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Maeve, Mannann

FOES: Ballok, Sorche

SYMBOL: Golden apple on a red or green field

WOR. ALIGN: Any chaotic, NG

Domains: Good, Chaos, Luck and Healing

Aengus is the youngest son of the Dagda and the goddess Dana. He is the patron of youth and its attributes: joy, courage, physical strength and beauty, and the love of simple pleasures. He is primarily worshipped by humans, elves, halflings, and some gnomes; the dwarves consider him flighty and lacking in dignity.

Aengus meddles frequently in human affairs, and may be found among mortals or gods when there is pleasure to be had. He enjoys feasting, hunting, and music, and throws himself into competition at every opportunity. He excels at footraces, wrestling, and chess, and is given to heavy drink and loud boasting. He is also fond of harping and singing, and is often called upon to entertain at the deities' feasts. Above all, he is fun loving and charismatic. He has been known to take mortal women as lovers, but never for long, as he is always eager to move on to the next beauty who catches his roving eye. He enjoys a strong bond with his father, the Dagda, who is good-natured about his son's antics, and with his half-sister Astara; Dana is less approving, but, like most of the other gods, is easily swayed from anger by his charming manner. Aengus frequently hunts with Herne; an argument over the right to a kill at one of these hunts strained his formerly friendly relations with Culainn. Tor thoroughly disapproves of the Young God's habits and will not associate with him in any active pursuits, but there is no antagonism between them.

Aengus' avatar appears as a well-muscled, handsome young man, in his late teens to early twenties. His hair and skin may be any shade, but he is likely to be tanned, and his eyes are always a swirling gray that seem to change color with his mood. He laughs often, drinks much, and is given to boasting, flirting, and doffing his shirt in public. In combat he wields two magical longswords, and he casts as a cleric.

Clergy generally wear stylish, brightly colored garments. Aengus' main festival is the Spring Equinox, but he is often called upon at any festival, especially during the warm seasons.

Astara
(The Spring Maiden, the Young Lady, the Younger Sister)
Intermediate Power of the Outlands, NG

PORTFOLIO: Spring, birth, renewal, purity, beginnings

ALIASES: Blodewth

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Avalon

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Brigitta, Culainn, the Dagda, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Maeve, Mannann, Morgan, Tor

FOES: Ballok, Chemelosian, Laekill, Sorche

SYMBOL: Three white or golden blossoms on a green field

WOR. ALIGN: Any good or neutral

Domains: Good, Sun, Healing, and Plant

Astara is the Spring Maiden, the youngest of the Three Sisters. She is believed to be a daughter of the Dagda; traditions vary on who her mother might have been (some claim that her mother, or Astara herself, was once a mortal elven woman or a Faery). Astara is the goddess of springtime, sunrise, birth, and beginnings of all kinds. She is also an emblem of purity, innocence, and virginity. Her worshipers include humans, elves, and some halflings.

Astara is a kind and loving being, and as innocent as it is possible for a deity to be. She is loved by almost all good and neutral beings, mortal or divine, and is especially dear to her half-brother Aengus, who protects and supports her in all things. She does not directly interfere in human affairs unless necessary, but enjoys talking with them, and will frequently wander the fields and woods in springtime and early summer. The Dagda allows her to usher in the spring by playing on his magical weather-changing harp.

Astara's avatar is a slender girl, who may appear to be anywhere from ten to eighteen years of age. She has very long golden hair and clear blue eyes, wears a simple garment of white and is always adorned with flowers. Where her feet touch the ground, a certain flower which bears her name will sometimes spring forth; these are star-shaped pale yellow blossoms with a delicate honey scent, and are greatly valued by her clergy as symbols of her divinity. Entire temples have been built around small clusters of astara blossoms, which are commonly used as spell components. She casts as a cleric.

Astaran clergy generally wear white or green, flowing garments. They are a peace-loving group, and spend much of their time playing music, helping the poor, and trying to make the world a more beautiful place. Virginity is not required, but highly esteemed. Astara's main holy day is Imbolc (beginning of February), but she is also called upon at Spring Equinox and Beltain.

Ballok
(Lord of Pain, Firelord, the Demon Prince)
Intermediate Power of the Abyss, NE

PORTFOLIO: Pain, diabolism, elemental fire

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Sulfanorum, the Red Pits

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Chemelosian, Fafnir, Sorche

FOES: Aengus, Astara, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Mannann, Tor

SYMBOL: Red eye with a black flame-shaped pupil

WOR. ALIGN: CN, any evil

Domains: Evil, Destruction, Fire, and War

Ballok is a demonic being from the 222nd layer of the Abyss. He has dominion over pain and suffering, and the destructive properties of fire and heat.

Ballok, as far as is known, was created by the Red Pits of Sulfanorum, a manifestation of the destructive power within them. He rose to the rank of Intermediate Power by destroying his predecessor, Gasherak, whose spirit he imprisoned in the terrible three-bladed polearm that he now wields.

Ballok is a mortal foe of the Three Sisters. He is allied with the other evil powers of the pantheon, although he considers Fafnir to be somewhat pathetic, and dislikes Laekill's methods. He often works closely with Sorche, and they have been lovers during some periods.

Ballok's avatar appears either as a smoldering column of flame, a handsome dark-haired man with flaming red eyes and an evil grin, or a monstrous horned beast, which resembles a Balor. He scorches the earth where he walks, and often nothing will ever grow on the ground again. He wields a unique, intelligent magical polearm, similar to a ranseur.

Ballokian clergy wear dark or flame-colored garments, and use flame as the center of their worship, often sacrificing live animals or intelligent beings by slowly burning them alive. They are more interested in the processes of pain than in quick destruction, and have made extensive studies involving gruesome experiments in vivisection and torture. Ballok's most prominent holy day is Samhain (end of October) and sometimes Midsummer will be celebrated in his name if there is a drought or a season of wildfires.

Brigitta
(The Mother, Lady of the Greenwood)
Intermediate Power of the Outlands, NG

PORTFOLIO: Summer, motherhood, feminine strength, grain, harvest

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Avalon

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, the Dagda, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Maeve, Mannann, Morgan, Tor

FOES: Chemelosian, Laekill, Sorche

SYMBOL: Acorn, sheaf of grain or straw cross

WOR. ALIGN: Any good or neutral

Domains: Good, Healing, Protection, and Plant

Brigitta is the middle of the Three Sisters, the personification of middle life, motherhood, and the fruits of the earth. She is invoked to bring about good harvests and to grant health to children and livestock.

Brigitta is a daughter of Dana and the Dagda and the consort of Lugh. She enjoys good relations with most of the other Talanuan deities, and is especially close with her mother, over whose decisions she is one of few who may exert any influence. She is still cool towards Culainn, who is Lugh's son by a mortal woman, and whose presence serves to remind her of Lugh's one betrayal of their union. She is matronly and wise, kind, and always concerned for the good of others. She exerts her power on behalf of mortals who need her help if she is called upon, and other deities frequently come to her for straightforward advice and comfort. She is also largely responsible for divine revels, being known for her excellent taste in, and ability to produce food and wine.

Brigitta's avatar is a robust middle-aged woman, with braided brown hair, kind hazel eyes and a smiling visage. Sometimes she wears or carries an attribute of harvest or motherhood, such as an apron, hand sickle, or rolling pin. She may appear at harvest festivals or field blessings, marriages, or important births. She casts as a cleric.

Brigitta's clergy are devoted to promoting prosperity and happiness. They bless births and marriages, heal the sick, and magically assist with the growing of crops. They celebrate Beltain (May Day) and Midsummer as her high holy days, and Lughnasadh (beginning of August) as the wedding festival of Brigitta and Lugh.

Chemelosian
(The Dark Lord, the Lich King, Father of Lies)
Greater Power of the Abyss, CE

PORTFOLIO: Murder, undeath, necromancy, betrayal

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Plain of Infinite Portals, Gallowsgate

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Ballok, Fafnir, Laekill, Sorche

FOES: Astara, Brigitta, the Dagda, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Morgan, Tor

SYMBOL: White skull on a red or black background

WOR. ALIGN: CN, CE, NE

Domains: Evil, Death, Knowledge and Magic

Chemelosian is the lord of unnatural death and undeath. He is the patron of assassins, poisoners, necromancers, conspirators, and those who kill for gain. Actions, which must be performed in secret and in the dark, are his province.

Chemelosian is the acknowledged lord of the evil deities in Talanu. While only Fafnir and Laekill will take direct orders from him, Ballok and Sorche are likely to follow his lead and assist him if he asks it. Most of the good-aligned deities are bitter enemies, while Herne opposes him as an affront to the natural order, Tor as an affront to law, and Morgan as an affront to the dignity of heroic death. Dana is his most active opponent, due to her ancient grievance over the fall of the Faery race.

Chemelosian is known for his dark and unpredictable nature. His palace in Gallowsgate is composed entirely of bones, and it is eternally expanded as the Dark God adds the bodies of fallen enemies to the structure. Its summit is continually circled by ravens and vultures, which pick the bones clean, and which also serve the god as messengers and spies. Its halls are patrolled by innumerable undead beings which guard and serve Chemelosian and his compatriots.

His avatar appears either as a dark, insubstantial figure in a flowing cloak, or a massive skeletal figure which leaves a trail of blood as it walks. He wields either a magical sword or a scythe, and casts as an archmage.

The Dark Lord's clergy are secretive but powerful. They use severed heads in most of their rituals, and are often attended by undead servants. The Dark Lord's high holy days are unknown except to his clergy.

Culainn
(The Great Warrior, Son of Lugh, the Hound)
Demipower of the Outlands, LN

PORTFOLIO: Battle, heroism

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, the Brugh

SUPERIOR: the Dagda

ALLIES: Astara, the Dagda, Herne, Maeve, Mannann, Tor

FOES: Morgan

SYMBOL: Red hound

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: War, Protection and Strength

Culainn is a newly raised demipower patron of heroes, fighters and soldiers.

Culainn was a half-mortal son of Lugh who was trained in the art of war by Shathach, Morgan's daughter, and at his mortal death was raised to demipower status, partly through the sponsorship of the Dagda. He was a nuisance throughout his lifetime to Morgan, as he refused repeatedly to die at his allotted time. She is unhappy about his new status, and will probably be antagonistic for some time to come. Thus far, Culainn has done nothing to earn other enemies among the pantheon, and has in fact become fast friends with Herne, in particular. Culainn's growing friendship with Aengus has been stymied by a heated dispute over the right to a kill on one of the Beast Lord's hunts. Lugh is offering no special assistance or favor to his son until he proves his worth as a deity. Brigitta, Lugh's consort, finds Culainn's presence painful, as it serves to remind her of Lugh's single betrayal of her trust.

Culainn's avatar appears much as he did in life, as a handsome, powerful man with a warrior's bearing. When he goes into his battle-rage, however, he transforms into a monstrous being with bugging eyes, multiple limbs, and a fountain of black blood spewing from the crown of his skull.

Culainn has not been deified long enough to have an organized clergy, but he is actively seeking heroic individuals worthy of his attention.

The Dagda {pronounced do-dah}
(Allfather, the Great God, Lord of the Earth)
Greater Power of the Outlands, CG

PORTFOLIO: Wisdom, trade, travel, prosperity

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, the Brugh

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, Culainn, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Maeve, Tor

FOES: Chemelosian, Sorche

SYMBOL: White oak leaf on a black background

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Good, Knowledge, Travel, and Luck

The Dagda is the patron deity of the human race and the father of many of the Talanuan gods. He is also worshiped by dwarves and other races that commonly dwell or delve underground. He is believed to grant prosperity, wealth and luck to his favored.

The Dagda does not often involve himself directly in mortal affairs, but his influence is strong over the Talanuan deities. Angus and Brigitta are among his progeny, and several other deities, including Astara, Herne, and Maeve, are sometimes said to be children of the Great God. Morgan, it has been rumored, is his daughter, but she no longer associates with the Dagda due his sponsorship of her formerly mortal nemesis Culainn as a demipower.

He is revered for his wisdom and knowledge, and is often consulted by other deities or called upon by mortals seeking advice or prophecy. He is generally good-natured, and is fond of food and drink. He holds court in any of four underground palaces in Tir na Nog. He owns a magical cauldron that produces unlimited food, and a magical oaken harp which can be used to control and change the weather, even to advance the passage of the seasons.

The Dagda's avatar usually appears as a dark-skinned, rotund man (sometimes a dwarf) with a broad smile and pouches which fairly bulge with coins and gems. He wears rich garments and tends to appear most often at feasts, festivals and trading fairs. In combat he uses a magical warclub, and can cast as an arch-wizard and as a cleric.

The Dagda's clergy live comfortably, and consider it part of their duty to help others do the same. They collect charity funds and set up employment for those who are out of work, and are supportive of adventuring companies as these bring plundered treasure into the local economy. The Dagda's main holy day is the Summer Solstice, and he is praised at times of prosperity such as harvests or feasts.

Dana
(Mother of the Gods, Great Mother, Great Goddess)
Greater Power of the Outlands, TN

PORTFOLIO: Magic, knowledge, scrying and prophecy

ALIASES: Anu, Corellon Larethian

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Tara

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, the Dagda, Herne, Maeve, Mannann, Morgan, Tor

FOES: Chemelosian, Ballok, Sorche

SYMBOL: Black cauldron filled with reflective liquid on a white or red background; the crescent moon in white or silver on a black background

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Magic, Protection, and Knowledge

Dana is the consort of the Dagda and the mother of many of the other Talanuan deities. She is the patron goddess of magic-users and fortunetellers. She is strongly associated with the moon, mirrors, and with still pools or wells of water.

Dana is believed to be a major deity of the Faerie pantheon, as well as in that of the humans. She is also commonly worshiped by magic-using members of demihuman races, particularly the elves, who have been known to combine her worship with that of Corellon Larethian. Indeed, some sages have proposed that the two might in reality be aspects of one androgynous deity.

Dana is known to be the mother of a number of deities, including Aengus, Brigitta, Maeve and Sorche. Herne is sometimes rumored to be her son, and sometimes a consort; in some circles it is believed that he is both. She is almost universally respected among the pantheon, with only Chemelosian and Ballok daring to overtly oppose her. Even those who do not ally themselves with her are dependent on her good will to practice magic within the crystal sphere, which is usually sufficient to keep the peace.

Dana is known to interfere in mortal affairs with relative frequency, as she takes a keen interest in magic-workers and the ways in which they use her gifts. She is fair in her distribution of power to various races and alignments, and is always searching for deeper knowledge of her chosen discipline.

Dana's avatar usually appears as a tall, dark-haired, graceful woman with deep blue eyes. She may be of any race, most often human or elven. She wears robes of deep midnight blue with silver stars scattered around the hems, and a silver circlet with an upturned crescent moon over her brow. She wields a magical dagger or sickle, in addition to her spellcasting abilities, and also carries a magical staff of immense power.

Dana's clergy usually wear dark robes. They are dedicated to the pursuit of arcane lore and secret knowledge. Dana's high holy days are the Summer and Winter Solstices, but her power is celebrated at all the major festivals.

Fafnir
(The Wyrm, the Vengeful One)
Lesser Power of Ysgard, LE

PORTFOLIO: Greed, avarice, vengeance

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Nidavellir, Wyrmsheim

SUPERIOR: Chemelosian

ALLIES: Sorche, Laekill

FOES: None

SYMBOL: Black dragon on a gold background

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Evil, Knowledge, and Law

Fafnir the Wyrm is a manifestation of greed, miserliness, suspicion, spite, and vengeance. He was once a mortal dwarf, but evil magic and his own avarice have so warped his body and his spirit that now he truly resembles the Wyrm that men call him. He is worshiped by thieves, dark dwarves, and those who have given themselves over to their desire for wealth.

Fafnir is the weakest of the evil deities, taking orders directly from Chemelosian (whom he obeys without fail) and often assisting the other evil deities with their work. He does not trust any of his compatriots, but reasons that working with them will keep them from interfering with his true pursuits: wealth and the knowledge of secrets. These treasures he hoards up in an enormous cavern in the plane of Ysgard. He guards them jealously, and on the few occasions that anyone has attempted or succeeded to take anything from him, he has meted out his own form of justice with savage ferocity. He is not yet considered enough of a threat by the good deities to have any true enemies; most of the deities consider him more of a nuisance than anything else.

Fafnir's avatar appears to be a great wyrm black dragon. His breath weapon is a mist which saps strength and consciousness from its victims and instills their life force into the beast.

Fafnir's clergy is sparse, as he is not known for being generous with spells or blessings. He has some following among the evil dragons of Talanu, which might serve to advance his position if he chooses to take advantage of it. He has no particular holy days or clergy costume.

Herne
(The Hunter, the Beast Lord, the Green Man, the Wolf Man, the Horned One)
Intermediate Power of the Beastlands, CN

PORTFOLIO: Chaos, wild nature, animals

ALIASES: Cernunos

DOMAIN NAME: Brux, the Great Wood

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, Culainn, the Dagda, Dana, Lugh, Maeve, Mannann, Morgan

FOES: Chemelosian, Ballok

SYMBOL: White wolf, or horned man's head crowned with leaves

WOR. ALIGN: Any chaotic or neutral

Domains: Chaos, Animal, Plant and Strength

Herne is the Master of the Wild Hunt, the lord of all that is wild and untamed in nature. He is both a hunter and protector of wild places and the animals that dwell in them.

Herne is on good terms with most of the good and neutral deities, though he has fallen out with Tor recently. He is friendlier with Aengus than most, and is also exceptionally close to Dana, although sources disagree on whether she might be his mother or his consort (or both). He abhors undead as an abomination against the natural order, which is the source of his animosity for Chemelosian. He also objects to Ballok because of his followers' penchant for setting fires in wild lands out of season.

Herne is extremely chaotic in nature, and one can never been certain whether he is going to behave cruelly or kindly at any given moment. The Wild Hunt runs down a man as often as it runs down a stag; on the other hand, mortal men are sometimes allowed to join in the hunt, and they are forever altered by the experience.

Herne's avatar appears either as a dire wolf or as a wild-haired, naked man with horns, usually riding or running in the company of the Wild Hunt. This throng of wolves, hounds, horses, gods and men crosses the land and sky on stormy nights, in wild pursuit of their quarry, whether man or beast. The baying of the hounds and wolves strikes terror into the heart of even the strongest men. Those who have joined in the Hunt invariably say that they have never felt so free, alive, joyous and utterly terrified in all their lives; it is an experience on the margin between life and death, and those who go through it are profoundly changed. Some become druids or rangers, some leave their families, and some go on to become great heroes. Herne fights and kills his quarry with bare hands or a dagger, and casts as a druid.

Herne's clergy are usually woodland hermits, living wild and solitary lives in the midst of savage nature. They often go without clothes or any but natural shelter. Full moon nights are important to Hernian clergy, as are nights when the Wild Hunt runs.

Laekill
(Lady of Frost, the Grey Hag)
Intermediate Power of Pandemonium, NE

PORTFOLIO: Frost, ruin, starvation, rough seas

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Pandesmos, Winter's Hall

SUPERIOR: Chemelosian

ALLIES: Chemelosian, Fafnir, Sorche

FOES: Astara, Brigitta, Lugh, Maeve, Mannann

SYMBOL: white and blue spiral

WOR. ALIGN: Any neutral or evil

Domains: Evil, Destruction, Death and Magic

Laekill is the queen of winter, the savage sea, and ruin. She claims those who die in storms, drown, or freeze or starve to death during winter or drought.

Laekill is an unpleasant being to spend time with, and as a result is largely left alone by the other deities. She takes direct orders from Chemelosian, and is somewhat allied with the other evil gods, though she will not work with Ballok. Lugh, the god of light, and Astara and Brigitta, who are concerned with the fruitfulness of the land, are her greatest enemies. Mannann disputes with her over the province of the ocean, and Maeve and Shathach are bitter over having lost several favorite mortals to icy and watery graves.

Laekill lives in Loki's realm on Pandemonium, in a palace comprised by winding caverns and fissures in a massive glacier poised over a dark sea. She does not speak aloud and does not smile, and even the other gods quickly find themselves growing chilly and uncomfortable in her presence.

Her avatar appears as an extremely gaunt, thin-haired and thin-lipped woman of indeterminate age. Her eyes are sunken, and a tattered grey garment hangs over her protruding bones and sagging breasts. Her hands resemble talons, and despite her emaciated appearance she can move with remarkable swiftness. She casts as an archmage.

Laekill's clergy are sometimes hired by ship captains to protect their vessels from her ravages. They dress in shades of blue and gray, and some take lifelong oaths of silence. One of the standard observances in the church, extended periods of fasting, produces a common appearance of emaciation among clergy members. Her high holy day is the Winter Solstice.

Lugh
(The Sun God, the Shining God, the Summer King)
Greater Power of the Outlands, LG

PORTFOLIO: Light, paladins, the sun, the quest for good

ALIASES: Ilâh

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, the Brugh

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, the Dagda, Herne, Maeve, Mannann, Morgan, Tor

FOES: Ballok, Chemelosian, Laekill, Sorche

SYMBOL: Golden sun or white stag

WOR. ALIGN: Any good or lawful

Domains: Good, Sun, Law and Strength

Lugh is a god of light and lawfulness, the quintessential paladin's deity. He is the patron of good fighters and those who use their power to defeat evil and promote order.

Lugh is well liked by most of the good and neutral gods and detested by the evil ones. Relations between Lugh and Dana are cool at best. He is the father of Culainn, but will show no special favoritism towards him until he proves himself as a god. He is the consort of Brigitta, and has been eternally faithful to her except for his dalliance with Culainn's mother, the greatest regret of his otherwise lawful existence. Lugh does not often interfere in human affairs directly unless some great good is at stake. He has been known to appear at battlefields on which major conflicts between good and evil are taking place.

Lugh is not without humor, but tends to be serious. He is the ultimate good in this world, and feels the great weight of that responsibility. He is not quick to judge others, preferring to allow their actions to demonstrate the nature of their heart. He truly sorrows for those who have been tempted or corrupted by evil, but he will not stay his hand when dark forces threaten. His mastery of military tactics is unparalleled among the gods, and he is often consulted by other deities when their favorite mortals are at war.

Lugh's avatar appears as a powerfully built man in full armor, with a shining visage and gleaming weapons. He usually uses a magical mace in battle, and he fights with grim determination and unfailing energy. He often appears astride a massive white war-horse with flaming wings. He casts as a paladin.

Lugh's clergy are devoted to the righting of wrongs and defense of the innocent. They favor white, gold and silver garments and usually wear armor. Lugh's high holy days are Midsummer and Lughnasadh, which honors his union with Brigitta.

Maeve
(The Kingmaker, the Intoxicating One)
Lesser Power of the Outlands, TN

PORTFOLIO: Kingship, sovereignty, politics

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Tara

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, Culainn, the Dagda, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Morgan, Tor

FOES: Laekill

SYMBOL: Green hill with crowned standing stone

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Protection, Luck, Trickery and War

Maeve is the goddess of kingship, leadership, and the intrigue and struggle of politics. Those who are or wish to be in power call on her for assistance.

Maeve is on good terms with most of the good and neutral deities of the Talanuan pantheon, and Laekill is the only evil deity with whom she is in open conflict. The fate of the king is tied to the fate of the land, and Maeve has also lost at least one favored mortal to a storm at sea, so she joins forces with Astara and Brigitta in their stand against the goddess of ruin.

Maeve plays a role in determining who is to become the ruler of the land, and has been known to place geisa on them to ensure their loyalty and fitness to rule. It is sometimes difficult to tell whether the breaking of these geisa brings about the end of the reign or merely heralds its arrival, but the result is always the same; when the geis is broken, the ruler's throne is soon lost.

Maeve's avatar appears as a stunningly beautiful, dark-haired woman with an imperious manner. She frequently seduces her chosen rulers prior to arranging for their installation, and has even remained a long-term consort of several of the greatest kings the land has ever known. In battle she wields a two-handed sword, and she casts as a cleric.

Maeve's clergy are mostly female, and frequently serve as advisors and aids to politicians, rulers and war leaders; they have also been known to conspire against kings who have been judged unfit to rule, and their masterful intrigues have upset many a royal house. They do not have a particular mode of dress. Clergy observe all the standard holy days, with no special emphasis on any. Maeve's name is invoked at political ceremonies and at battles.

Mannann
(The Sea God, Prince of the Waves)
Intermediate Power of the Outlands, TN

PORTFOLIO: The ocean, ships, seafarers, elemental water

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Innisevan

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Aengus, Astara, Brigitta, Culainn, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Tor

FOES: Ballok, Laekill

SYMBOL: Salmon on a green or blue background

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Travel, Protection, Luck and Water

Mannann is the god of the ocean, and of the ships and men who sail it. He is primarily worshiped by sailors, travelers, seafaring warriors, pirates, fishermen, and traders and coastline dwellers whose livelihoods depend on the sea.

Mannann is not a sociable deity as a rule, but he is well liked by most of the good and neutral gods. He has no extremely close ties with anyone, and his greatest enemy is Laekill, who disputes his province over the ocean, stirring the sea up in murderous tempests and drowning his worshipers by the shipload.

Mannann's avatar never appears on land. He may manifest as a funnel or column of water, or as a large merman. He sometimes sends salmon, dolphins or gulls to assist, guide or show favor to his followers. A tale is told that once a lucky ship's captain whose vessel had caught fire prayed for Mannann's assistance, and the frantic crew was soon assisted in their efforts to douse the flames by a dozen pelicans who repeatedly spilled full pouches of water onboard.

Mannann's clergy wear garments of blue and green, and favor scale mail. Some prefer the water-like flow of robes, while others wear skin-tight clothing appropriate for swimming. Mannann's main holy days are those held in summer, when the sea is at its calmest.

Morgan
(the Crone, the Battle-Hag, the Raven)
Greater Power of the Outlands, CN

PORTFOLIO: War, chaos, battle-death

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, Avalon

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Astara, Brigitta, Dana, Herne, Lugh, Maeve, Tor

FOES: Chemelosian, Culainn

SYMBOL: Black raven on red background

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Chaos, War, Destruction and Magic

Morgan is the goddess of war and battle, the patron of fighters. She presages and attends the deaths of great heroes in battle.

Morgan is on good terms with most of the gods, except Chemelosian, whose version of death she disapproves of, and Culainn, who was a nemesis of hers during his mortal lifetime. She does not approve of Culainn's elevation to demipower status, and her relations with the Dagda are strained because of his sponsorship of Culainn.

Morgan interferes with relative frequency in human affairs, often giving advance warning of heroes' impending deaths.

Morgan's avatar appears either as a large black raven, an imposing woman with crow-black hair and a massive battle-axe, or as an old washerwoman. The raven form is the one she most frequently uses on the battlefield, only appearing as the warrior woman in exceptional circumstances. The washerwoman will sometimes appear to a warrior whose death is imminent. She is an old woman who is found at a stream or pond, washing clothes or armor which resemble those of the doomed hero. If asked what she is doing, she will reply that she is washing the clothes of a great warrior who has died in battle.

Morgan's clergy are usually of a warlike bent, and may wear any type of armor. They favor black and red for their garments. Morgan's highest holy day is Samhain.

Lady Scathach, legendary head of both the Fianna and Gae Bolga regimes, and the greatest warrior in the history of the world, is a mystery even to those who know her intimately. Many argue that Scathach should not be included in the listing of Talanu's deities at all. Those on the opposite side of the argument maintain that, given the options available, "god" comes the closest to describing what we know about her, (which is very little).

As described elsewhere, her first officially recorded appearance was well after the Kaeron Wars, when she was discovered by the Militant Scarlett Order already living in the warrens of Caer Mawr. There are bits and pieces in earlier tales, however, including records salvaged from the wreckage of the Kaeron state, that hint of her involvement in events down through the ages. These tales speak of a beautiful, deadly Tuath'lor who mysteriously appeared, made trouble for the local authorities (including assasinating various Kaeron officials, slaughtering an entire batallion of Kaeron battlemages, etc.), and then just as mysteriously disappeared. The records never tie these multiple instances together, and in typical Kaeron fashion go out of their way to downplay the damage done by one female slave. The fact that one woman was able to withstand the might of the Faery peoples, in multiple instances spanning several hundred years worth of records, is nevertheless quite telling.

These Kaeron tales are mirrored in the Mac Gwyr Cycle. These stories speak of the Wild Woman of the Woods, who came to the people in their time of need. She first appeared in the cycle as a protector, guarding the backs of the people as they fled from the Formori. She is said to have slaughtered hundreds of pursuing Kaeron, giving the Mac Gwyr an opportunity to escape. She is also credited with introducing the Mac Gwyr to the Spirits of the Land, who in turn trained them in the ways of the wilderness. The Wild Woman is one of the greatest, and most mysterious, figures of the entire Cycle, and has a permanent place of honor in their pantheon.

All of these elements offer tantalizing glimpses and hints, but no proof. The problem of origin is further complicated by the fact that Scathach vehemently denies that any of those women were her, and refuses to accept worship from anyone. She also refuses to expound upon her history in any way, leaving the rest of the world to guess. The gods themselves, and the various mortals with whom she has chosen to share her life, are also silent on the subject of her history.

Also adding to the debate over her godhood is the subject of her powers. Scathach is, most definitely, a creature of the Prime. She does not dwell on the top of some mountain in a far off plane of existence. Those who have travelled with her off world describe the warrior as becoming decidedly uncomfortable upon leaving her home plane. Some have taken this to mean that she, like other gods, is more vulnerable when leaving their native environment. The "true" gods, however, can only leave their home when manifesting an avatar. Scathach does not seem to have that restriction.

She differs from the rest of the gods in other ways as well. She has no organized church. Those who worship her get no spells. She prefers to ride or fly to her destinations, though it is known that she can teleport herself and others very easily. In many respects, she appears no different than any other extremely powerful adventurer, (who is at least 1000 years old), rather than someone of godlike power.

In combat, however, everything changes.

Scathach has never been bested in combat by anything. In one famous instance, she battled the avatars of both Fafnir and Ballok with one hand tied behind her back, (hence the expression), and came out completely unscathed. The avatars were, of course, both destroyed.

So, until a better term comes along, those who care and classify such things have deemed the Bitch of War to be a demi-power. Just don't bring it up when she's around.

Sorche

DOMAIN NAME: Blood Tor, Deathkiss Keep

SUPERIOR: None

ALLIES: Chemelosian, Ballok, Laekill, Fafnir

FOES: Aengus, Brigitta, the Dagda, Lugh

SYMBOL: Red lip print on a black background

WOR. ALIGN: Any evil

Domains: Evil, Chaos, Trickery, and Death

Sorche is the goddess of physical and emotional agony, passion that is unlawful or perverted, and disease.

Sorche is allied with all the other evil deities, and a sometime consort of Ballok. All the good and neutral deities except Aengus, Brigitta, the Dagda and Lugh regard her with more distaste and suspicion than outright hatred. She interferes frequently in mortal affairs, and is rumored to have a stronghold on the physical plain on Talanu, hidden somewhere under the earth.

Sorche's avatar appears much like a succubus - the most attractive imaginable female of any race. (In fact, according to some sources, she is, or was, a succubus prior to a deal she made with Chemelosian to gain divine status. According to others, she was a vampiress.) She has been known to seduce and kill mortals, either through violent means, often involving torture, through a kiss that drains their life essence, or by giving them a lingering disease, which eventually proves fatal.

Sorche's clergy are mostly female, and devoted to spreading pain and corruption. They favor revealing clothing in dark shades.

Tor

WOR. ALIGN: Any lawful

Domains: Law, Strength, Protection and War

Tor is the god of law and order and martial valor. He is called upon in battle and in courts of law, and his name is often invoked in the swearing of oaths.

Tor is the judge of most disputes among the gods, and is known for his unerring sense of justice and ability to uncover the truth. In a dispute between the Dagda and Chemelosian, Tor once judged in favor of the Dark God after assembling all the facts. When the gods cannot resolve a conflict on their own terms, Tor is usually the final arbiter they appeal to.

Tor does not commonly interfere in human affairs, preferring to work through his followers to ensure that justice is done. His clerics act as judges and counselors in many cities throughout Talanu, and his worshipers usually make wise and just rulers. He is the patron of mercenaries and career military fighters. Many monks also follow Tor.

Tor's avatar appears as a middle-aged, but still powerful, man in armor. He carries either the scales of justice or his magical warhammer, according to the role he is fulfilling, either as judge or as war god.

Tor's clergy usually dress in shades of gray or blue, which many will accent with red. His high holy days are the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes, when the day and night are of equal length.

Demihuman Deities

Elven Pantheon

The elves of Talanu worship the same major elven deities that appear in the Forgotten Realms Demihuman Deities book (Corellon Larethian, Angharradh, etc.) They are also known to worship Astara, Brigitta, Morgan, Aengus, and Herne. Following are two additional deities unique to this crystal sphere.

Gieran Ashan'rai (Starfire Oakleaf)
(The Autumnal, the Snow Prince, Prince of Destruction)
Demipower of the Outlands, CG

PORTFOLIO: Autumn, battle, destruction, fire, magic, war, weather, winter

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Tir na Nog, The Isle of Thorns

SUPERIOR: Corellon Larethian

ALLIES: Angharradh, Astara, Brigitta, Dana, Hanali Celanil, Herne, Morgan, Silvara Celarathil

FOES: Ballok, Laekill

SYMBOL: A brown leaf set against a white background, with red blood splatters

WOR. ALIGN: any good or neutral

Domains: Good, Destruction, and War

Gieran Ashan'rai is the elven Prince of Destruction, in its purgative and natural sense. He is associated with autumn and winter, and with the necessary tearing down of that which is not good or has outlived its usefulness, so that rebuilding may take place.

As a mortal elf, Gieran, known as Starfire, demonstrated enormous destructive capability in combating evil. Geiran was overtaken by the Wild Hunt one stormy night, and rather than fleeing, joined and rode among their number for some time. Herne quickly grew to respect Gieran's capacity for promoting destruction and chaos, and, with Corellon Larethian's consent and cooperation, sponsored his bid for demipower status.

Gieran intervenes in acts of destruction, using his influence to maximize their usefulness and their resulting restorative effects. This meddlesome habit has led him into direct conflict with Ballok and Laekill, and he has earned their animosity. He still assists Herne frequently. According to some, Gieran has begun courting the Astara, the spring goddess, whose porfolio and personality complement his.

Gieran appears as a handsome middle-aged elf, with white hair and deep brown eyes. He is clad all in white, and multihued autumn oak leaves swirl about his feet. In battle Gieran uses his matched great axes of frost and fire. He possesses a daunting power of destruction that will blast everything within a radius of several miles, but is loath to use this capability except in the direst circumstances. He casts as a mage.

This relatively new deity's clergy are still few in number. They dress in white, often with brown accents. His high holy days are Samhain and the Autumnal Equinox.

Silvara Celarithil (Silvara Songheart)
(the Songbird, the Harper)
Lesser Power of Arborea, CG

PORTFOLIO: Music, poetry, bards

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Olympus, Arvandor

SUPERIOR: Correllon Larethian, Hanali Celanil

ALLIES: Aengus, Angharradh, Astara, Brigitta, Hanali Celanil, Herne, Morgan, Gieran Ashan'rai

FOES: Chemelosian, Sorche

SYMBOL: small bird on a branch

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Good, Luck, Knowledge, and Travel

Silvara Celarithil is the elven patron of song, poetry, storytelling, and the bardic arts. She is regularly invoked by elven bards as their primary muse.

Silvara does not intervene in mortal affairs as often as she simply wanders the land, listening, observing, and gathering songs. She will occasionally grant special favor to an individual bard in the form of a wonderful tale or song, and has been known to perform for mortal audiences herself a very few times in the history of the world. Among the deities she is considered essential to every festive gathering. ("To throw a good party, you need Brigitta for the food, Silvara for the music, and me for the ladies," Aengus once told a human innkeeper in Mellik.) She plays seemingly every instrument in existence, including some which are unknown to Talanuan mortals, with exceeding skill, and is capable of holding an audience spellbound for hours with her epic tales and poems. Her greatest asset, however, is her singing voice, which is said to be the most unearthly and beautiful sound in all the planes. She has not performed vocally in mortal hearing for many centuries. According to elven tradition, her last such appearance was at the coronation of a forgotten High King, and the reaction of the audience was so intense as to dissuade her from subsequent concerts. Some were so overcome by the emotions evoked by Silvara's song that they went mad, and one young noble is said to have attempted suicide, explaining to his rescuers that he was driven to it by the certainty of having experienced the peak of his existence in the mortal realm. To this day, some older elves will refer to an insane person by saying that he "has heard Silvara's song."

Silvara's avatar appears either as a nightingale or as a graceful elven woman with shoulder-length raven-black hair. She dresses either in comfortable traveling clothes or in gypsy garb, and appears to be alertly observing everything around her. She casts as a bard and carries a set of magical throwing daggers.

Silvara's clergy are loosely organized, and often appear on the administrator's boards at bardic colleges and guilds. They are devoted to the collection and dispersion of great songs and stories throughout Talanu. Her high holy day is Beltain, but she is called upon often at celebrations of any kind.

Dwarven Pantheon

The dwarves of Talanu primarily worship the major dwarven gods from the Forgotten Realms Demihuman Deities book (Moradin, Clangeddin, etc.). They are also known to worship the Dagda, Tor, and Fafnir. There are no known unique Talanuan dwarven deities.

Halfling Pantheon

The halflings of Talanu primarily worship the halfling deities from the Forgotten Realms Demihuman Deities book (Brandobaris, Yondalla, etc.). They are also known to worship Astara, Brigitta, Morgan, the Dagda, and Aengus. Following are two unique Talanuan halfling deities.

Jeffen
(the Hearth Sweeper, the Baker)
Lesser Power of Mount Celestia, LG

PORTFOLIO: Baking, the hearth, ale, hospitality

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Venya, Green Fields

SUPERIOR: Cyrrollalee, Yondalla

ALLIES: Astara, Brandobaris, Brigitta, Tymora, Tyron

FOES: None

SYMBOL: a bowl of rising dough

WOR. ALIGN: LG, NG, LN, TN

Domains: Good, Healing, and Protection

Jeffen is the halfling god of bread and ale, the all-important gifts of grain. He, along with Cyrrollalee, presides over the domestic features of halfling life.

Jeffen does not often interfere in the lives of mortals, preferring to lead a comfortable existence in his home in Venya. He is known to sometimes show his favor by multiplying rising dough into several times the amount it should have produced, or by keeping baked bread fresh till long after it should have gone hard or moldy. In this way he saved one halfling town whose fields had been ravaged by a passing army of goblins; the entire community was fed for a month on bread from a single bowl of dough until supplies could be brought in.

Jeffen is usually named at halfling celebrations, and it is often in his name that traveling or wandering halflings will ask food or shelter. He is the god of good hospitality as well as of ale and bread. Some halfling bakers will carve his rune (an X with longer lower arms than upper) on the tops of their loaves. (Halfling loaves, being proportional, are about the size of a large dinner roll or teacake, which has earned the god the pejorative nickname "Jeff, the God of Biscuits" among the larger races.)

Jeffen's avatar appears as a rotund, cheerful older halfling man with light brown hair. He wears an apron, and is usually carrying either a mug of ale or a baker's paddle. He casts as a cleric.

Jeffen's clergy devote much of their efforts to feeding the hungry and making sure that everyone in their community has sufficient supplies. A few inns and hostels are run by devotees of the Baker. His high holy day is Imbolc.

Tyron
(Tyron the Quick, the Dodger)
Lesser Power of Mount Celestia, TN

PORTFOLIO: Sanctuary, safety, stealth, cowardice

ALIASES: None

DOMAIN NAME: Venya, Green Fields

SUPERIOR: Yondalla

ALLIES: Astara, Brandobaris, Brigitta, Cyrrollalee, Jeffen, Tymora

FOES: None

SYMBOL: Large lidded urn

WOR. ALIGN: Any

Domains: Luck, Trickery and Protection

Tyron is a deity mostly worshiped by low-level halfling thieves and mages. His domain is that of staying whole by staying hidden.

Tyron is said to be a lesser-known brother of Brandobaris the Trickster, the wandering adventurer-god of the halflings. This may very well be the case, but while Brandobaris is known for irrepressibly seeking out danger and excitement, Tyron does his best to get away from the excitement when it shows up. whether by running, sneaking, or diving headfirst into the nearest convenient pickle barrel.

Tyron's avatar, when he appears, which isn't often, appears as a thin halfling who seems perpetually on the verge of bolting from the room. Given the slightest provocation, this is precisely what he will do. His combat abilities are unknown.

Tyron's clergy is not highly visible. They will sometimes control "safe holes" where thieves and wandering folk can seek shelter and a place to lie low till the heat dies down.

Gnomish Pantheon

Gnomes of Talanu worship the standard gods from the Forgotten Realms Demihuman Deities book (Garl Gittergold, Baervan Wildwander, etc.). They are also known to worship the Dagda.

There are no known unique Talanuan gnomish deities.

Orcish Pantheon

Orcs generally worship the evil and neutral members of the human and dwarven pantheons, especially Ballok, Chemelosian, Abbathor, and Laduguer. Half-orcs will often worship members of the human or dwarven pantheons which suit their alignment.
